Candidate Essay
On Tuesday September 14, the voters of our district will have a clear choice as to who will represent them on Beacon Hill. The choice is between an effective, responsive and accessible local leader or a 10 year incumbent who will continue business as usual.
Since I started campaigning, I’ve seen the terrible toll that ineffective representation has had on our district. I’m running to be your representative because I know I can do more for Saugus, Wakefield, Lynn, and Lynnfield.
Last week I met an elderly woman who told me how prescription drug costs are bankrupting her. Rather than helping her children, she now worries that she will have to move in with them. I know I can do more for our seniors.
Parents are constantly sharing their concerns with deteriorating school buildings, a lack of jobs in the area, and dwindling resources. They want to know who’s fighting for their children’s education and our local economy. I know I can do more for working families.
The problems we face today are the same problems we faced ten years ago. The water main breaks on Route 1 drain our local budgets. The ongoing safety issues on Lynnfield Street remain unaddressed. Constant budget battles tear our communities apart; in Saugus local officials were debating whether to improve the Belmonte Middle School and ensure its accreditation or to save the Saugus Public Library by providing proper funding for its re-certification. This is a choice no town should make. I know I can do more for our communities.
The numbers don’t lie. Of the four communities in the 9th Essex, three are severely underfunded compared to similar neighboring towns.
| Town | State Aid |
| Reading | $9.3 Million |
| Melrose | $7.4 Million |
| Andover | $7.3 Million |
| North Reading | $6.0 Million |
| North Andover | $5.4 Million |
| Wakefield | $4.8 Million |
| Saugus | $4.8 Million |
| Lynnfield | $4.0 Million |
I will focus on our local priorities and find new solutions. I will bring to the office a law degree and experience working in private firms, state agencies, and non-profits organizations. I have negotiated multi-year labor contracts and balanced multi-million dollar budgets on the School Committee. I have written policies and initiated state legislation. I’ve built coalitions from revenue forums that have reinvigorated our downtown businesses to energy conservation initiatives to save taxpayer money.
I know I can do more for our district and I respectfully ask for your vote on September 14th.
